Description from the seller

Beautiful English Beswick Staffordshire Spaniel dogs, hand-painted and decorated with a golden collar, also called shoulder dogs, which were mirror images of each other. This dog was made around 1950.
An intriguing legend surrounds these Staffordshire Spaniel figurines: The Victorian tale goes that the Spaniel figurines placed on a pretty married lady's windowsill carried a secret message. When the dogs stood back to back, the lady of the house let her lover know that her husband was at home.
When the dogs faced each other, it meant that her husband was at sea so that she could welcome her lover.
Dimensions: HxWxD (weight): 22 cm x 19 cm x 11 cm
