Description from the seller
GREAT ancient Russian icon 'St. John the Baptist' from the 19th century (around 1880). Hand-painted with egg tempera paints on a wooden panel with a chalk ground.
Typical method of icon creation in 18th and 19th century Imperial Russia. The motif is widespread and very popular in the Orthodox Church.
This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is quite masterful and detailed. Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic crackles (see photos).
Partial restorations are present (see photos). The face of the saint is particularly expressive and striking (see photos). The saint is labeled. The inscriptions are clearly legible.
There is a vertical crack running down the left half of the icon (see photos).
On the back, two cross braces are attached (see photos). Stable and solid wooden panel. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear (see photos).
An icon for collectors and connoisseurs of the subject.
All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are part of the description.
