Body Loud!
Ryan McGinley
Tokyo Opera City Foundation/2016/Japanese/265*250*10
Body Loud!, a photobook by Ryan McGinley, one of the leading photographers representing contemporary America. Born in New Jersey in 1977, McGinley admired artists and musicians from his teenage years. After studying graphic design at Parsons, he turned to photography. Influenced by Larry Clark and David Armstrong, he created works centered on street subculture motifs. His self-published book The Kids Were Alright drew industry attention, leading to a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art—the youngest artist ever to achieve this distinction—marking the beginning of McGinley's American Dream. He later shifted his style, creating surreal staged photographs set against vast natural landscapes during journeys across the United States, building his own “utopia.” This book is a catalog of works published on the occasion of an exhibition held at Tokyo Opera City in 2016.
