Description from the seller
Set of four bentwood chairs – Jacob & Josef Kohn, second half of the 19th century
A set of four bentwood chairs from the renowned Jacob & Josef Kohn manufactory, dating to the second half of the 19th century.
The chairs are from the same model but are not perfectly identical: the wood finish shows a slight variation in two pairs, one slightly darker than the other. This feature does not spoil their overall harmony and allows them to be placed in the same room or around the same table, even enhancing their sense of history, authenticity, and the timeless appeal.
These are collectible objects, expressions of the excellence of bentwood furniture production during a period of great technical and stylistic innovation. The Jacob & Josef Kohn manufactory was, in fact, one of the leading and most important competitors of the famous Thonet company.
Historical notes:
Jacob & Josef Kohn is a renowned Austro-Hungarian furniture manufacturer and interior designer, founded in Vienna in 1849. Jacob Kohn initially started the company in the construction timber sector; from 1867, together with his son Josef, he directed production toward bentwood furniture. Thanks to branches in Berlin, Paris, London and Hamburg, the company became, starting in 1882, one of the leading producers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, establishing itself as a direct competitor of Thonet.
