Ancient Roman gold domed appliqué titled Domed Appliqué, circa 1st–4th century AD, measuring 0.8 cm by 0.4 cm and weighing 0.42 g, with a circular hollow dome, granulated trail, a thin reverse gold sheet with two suspension loops (one broken) and signs of wear; provenance from a private collection, acquired in 2010.
Description from the seller
A Roman gold appliqué featuring a circular, hollow domed shape. The appliqué features a dome farmed by a granulated trail. The reverse features a thin gold sheet with two raised loops for suspension. The gold sheet might have been attached later in antiquity. One of the loops is now broken. There are signs of wear such as indentations and earthly encrustations.
As in many ancient societies, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate wealth in Ancient Rome. Following the spread of the Roman Empire, Roman jewellery became more and more elaborate in the designs and in the materials used, such as precious and semi-precious gemstones. Roman jewellery reflected the culture the Romans entered in contact with, and testified the prosperity and the power of the Roman Empire. Rings were the most popular pieces of Roman jewellery, usually embellished with fine carving.
Measurements: W 0.8cm x H 0.4cm
Weight: 0.42g
Provenance: Ex Japanese gentleman (deceased) collection, 1970 - 2010.
