Under a Grudging Sun
Alex Webb
Thames & Hudson/Japanese/313*250*10
American photographer Alex Webb's photobook ‘Under a Grudging Sun’. Webb, who had been seriously pursuing photography since high school, participated in workshops led by masters like Bruce Davidson even then. After enrolling at Harvard University (majoring in History and Literature), he continued his studies at the university's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. He began his career as a journalist after graduation. In 1979, he became a full member of Magnum Photos and remains an active photographer, continuing to release works energetically to this day. Set in Mexico, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Africa, Webb's depictions—created with bold compositions, high-contrast color, and masterful use of light and shadow—carry a strong journalistic message. He is often hailed as a pioneer of “color journalism” from a perspective distinct from the “New Color” movement. This book, published in 1989, is a collection of his early work shot in Haiti.
