Description from the seller

Phemba Maternity – Bakongo – Democratic Republic of the Congo

A masterful embodiment of sacred motherhood, between protection, transmission, and spiritual power.

This Phemba Bakongo maternity, carved in dense wood and covered with a deep ancient patina, belongs to one of the most emblematic and symbolically charged corpora of Central Africa. The Phemba figures embody the ideal mother, at once nurturing, protective, and the custodian of the vital forces of the lineage.

The figure stands upright, a stance less common than seated maternities, giving the whole an assertive and dynamic presence. The powerful body, with full, balanced volumes, supports the child tightly held against the chest. The gesture is at once intimate and solemn: it expresses the continuity of life, the transmission of the nkisi (spiritual force), and maternal responsibility at the heart of Kongo society.

The face, with expressive modeling, displays pronounced and stylized features, highlighted by traces of ancient pigments. The half-closed eyes convey inner concentration, spiritual vigilance rather than observation of the visible world. The child, depicted in a deliberately compact manner, reinforces the idea of an inseparable bond between mother and offspring.

The Phemba maternity complexes were associated with fertility cults, with the protection of pregnant women, but also with rites related to the continuity of the clan and the legitimacy of power. Some could be maintained in specific ritual contexts, in relation to initiation societies or the heads of the lineage.

The antique specimens, complete, with an authentic patina and a strong sculptural presence, are today particularly sought after. This piece fully embodies the great tradition of Bakongo sculpture, where aesthetics, spirituality, and social function come together with remarkable intensity.
