Description
Rare and authentic Dutch bridal chest from the 18th century, made in 1771, crafted in solid oak. The front is richly adorned with hand-carved ornamentation and bears a clearly legible name-and-year inscription: Herme Kotman Anno 1771.
Such signed and dated bridal chests were traditionally made on the occasion of a wedding and served to store linen and personal belongings. The object is a fine example of Dutch folk art and reflects the craftsmanship of the carving and the sturdy construction of the late 18th century.
The chest is fitted with an original iron lock and is supplied with the corresponding key, which contributes to its authenticity and rarity. The warm patina and visible signs of wear underscore the age and historical character of the piece.
Condition
