A restored Aepyornis elephant bird egg from Madagascar, dating to about 2000 years ago, mounted on a custom bronze base, 33 cm high including the base and 21 x 21 cm footprint.
Description from the seller
Extraordinary Aepyornis egg (the Elephant Bird of Madagascar), one of the rarest and most fascinating natural testimonies to have come down to us.
The Aepyornis was the largest bird ever to exist, and its eggs represent the largest eggs known in nature, having become an iconic symbol of extinct megafauna. This specimen stands out for its exceptional size and the excellent state of preservation of the shell, characterized by a uniform surface and a particularly pleasing natural patina.
The egg is mounted on a custom-made bronze base that enhances its display and heightens its visual impact, making it ideal for museum collections, galleries, professional studios, and major private collections.
Items of this kind are today extremely rare on the market, both due to intrinsic fragility and the restrictions governing their collection. An object that combines scientific, historical, and aesthetic value, destined to become the centerpiece of your collection.
Located at the base, there is a minimal restoration carried out by professionals in the field; the restoration is highlighted in red in the last photo. There are also some cracks that have been consolidated. This intervention affects only a very marginal percentage of the surface, a circumstance that helps make this specimen a rarity of particular value.
Dimensions: height 30 cm, height including the bronze base 33 cm.
Item from an old collection.
An authentic testimony of a vanished world, reserved for a few and select connoisseurs.
