Description from the seller

Benin
Culture Fon
Ceremonial scepters
Wood
Height: 78 cm

Beautiful and large ceremonial scepter of the Fon of Benin. It represents Shango / Hevioso, god of thunder and war. He is a powerful and feared deity. He is here represented as a woman, brandishing in the air his double-edged axe. His axe is simplified and stylized; it is a symbol of his power. A childlike figure sits at its center. A snake adorns the face and a gecko on its back. The whole is beautiful and harmonious. A soft yet powerful presence emanates from this work. It is a special, captivating and mysterious object that transports us into the dreamlike and magical world of Voodoo culture. Beautiful old patina. Cracks and flaws visible in the photos, it is solid, sold as is. A beautiful old and authentic collectible piece with character. Circa 1950.

Provenance
- Private collection, Germany.
