Description from the seller
Christ the Savior (Pantocrator)
Tempera and oil on a solid wood panel, reinforced with two original back crossbars.
Russian or Ukrainian school. 19th century.
Measurements: 89 × 53 × 3 cm.
Full-body representation of Christ, standing, blessing with his right hand and holding a cross or staff with his left. He wears a reddish-brown tunic and a green mantle with broad folds, symbolizing his divinity and eternal life. The face, frontal and serene, stands out for its solemn gaze, framed by a circular nimbo over a background of earthy and bluish tones that add spiritual depth.
The composition follows the traditional model of Christ Pantocrator or Savior of the World, characteristic of 19th-century Orthodox religious painting, especially in Russian and Ukrainian workshops. The arched top format suggests that it originally was part of an iconostasis, probably in a lateral position.
The work retains its original patina, natural craquelure, and a central vertical crack consistent with the age of the support. It shows no visible overpainting and maintains structural solidity thanks to the original crossbars.
A piece of great devotional strength and chromatic harmony, a representative example of the spirituality and formal sobriety of 19th-century Orthodox iconography.
Period: 19th century.
Condition: good, with antique patina and stable structure.
It is only sent to countries of the European Community.
