Description from the seller
Silver skein holder, probably made in Friesland – master mark HS, inspected on the hook. The rest of the skein holder has been tested.
A beautiful example of Frisian silversmithing from the 19th century with twisted silver wire.
The ball of yarn holder measures 12 × 15 cm and is typically intended for storing yarn or skeins, an essential part of the traditional costume. The object combines functionality with craftsmanship: the silver is carefully finished and displays the refined level of silversmiths from this period.
Historical context:
Cowl holders were a commonly used household and clothing accessory in the Netherlands. They served not only to keep yarn neatly at hand but also as a symbol of wealth and status within the Dutch cultural context. Silver was often chosen by the wealthier classes, making this item both practical and decorative.
