Holo Suku statue from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating to the mid‑20th century, 32 cm high, 1 cm deep, 1 g, in excellent condition, provenance private collection (Peter H. Loebarth).
Description from the seller
Figure Holo Suku, DR Congo (Ubangi region).
Rare and highly seductive statuette with meticulous modeling, both refined and expressive, characterized by a compact silhouette, full volumes, and a frontal posture that gives it an immediately captivating presence. The face, calm and focused, is treated with great mastery: half-closed eyelids, a discreetly lined mouth, and planes softened by an old, deep patina, punctuated by wear consistent with the passage of time and handling.
A remarkable detail: a mythical animal is sculpted at the peak of the head, a motif frequently encountered on the high masks of the Suku. In the tradition of this cultural area, these zoomorphic superstructures are generally understood as signs of power and protection, linked to the world of the bush and to the qualities sought during initiation rites, notably those of the Mukanda, where animal imagery plays a role as emblem and symbolic marker.
Provenance: private collection, Peter H. Loebarth (Germany).
A piece of fine quality, homogeneous, with a rare and sought-after aesthetic, ideal for a discerning collection.
