Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Animal totemic sculpture from the Yaka/Suku of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating to the mid‑20th century, from a private collection and accompanied by its official provenance document.
Description from the seller
Zoomorphic animal of the Yaka or Suku, DR Congo, Kwango region (southwest).
Artwork sold with its official original document of origin and provenance.
Wooden sculpture of rare typology, remarkable for the accuracy of its proportions and for its deliberately synthetic styling. The body, resting on its legs, is built from solid, compact volumes, then animated by a regularly incised decoration that rhythmically lines the back and the flanks. The head, slightly oversized, concentrates the expression: gaze reduced to the essential, short muzzle, mouth discreetly marked, giving the whole an unexpectedly lively presence. This type of small zoomorphic sculpture, halfway between a prestige object and a piece with a strong symbolic charge depending on context, is today particularly appreciated for its formal modernity and its rarity on the market. The dark patina, aged, shows wear and marks of time that are coherent, reinforcing the authentic character and the sculptural reading of the object.
Our Gallery: Héritage Galerie has established itself as a reference thanks to a rigorous selection and transparent presentation of the works.
Each piece is accompanied by a documentation file containing the identification information, the available details on provenance, as well as a synthesis of our study on the context and ritual use.
We are based in Belgium and ensure fast shipping worldwide, within 24 hours, insured and tracked, with careful packaging.
We remain reachable and responsive seven days a week to ensure a worry-free purchase, before as well as after the sale. To view reviews and official information, find us by searching “Héritage Galerie” on Google.
