Description from the seller
Boulder Opal pendant / new
Set in 925 sterling silver
Including leather strap (80 cm)
Weight: 18.2 ct / 3.64 g (weighed without leather strap)
21.0 mm x 13.9 mm x 6.2 mm
Brand new and unworn
Boulder opal refers to precious opals that are embedded in veins and cracks of the surrounding host rock. In this valuable gemstone from the Outback, the host rock, the matrix, is part of it. The noble opal cannot be separated from its host rock. The proportion of the precious opal on the visible surface of the Boulder opal determines the value of the gemstone.
Boulder opals occur exclusively in Queensland, Australia. In a 300 km by 1000 km wide distribution area, mineable Boulder Opal deposits are mined at various localities. This opal belt corresponds to the Cretaceous Winton Formation. From the late Cretaceous, weathered deposits from rivers and lakes formed an iron-rich zone in which silica-rich precipitates from the overlying layers collected in cracks and fractures near groundwater. There they consolidated through drying into gel and finally into secondary-formed opal.
