Description from the seller
5 beautiful hand-painted boards!
Design style: The pattern is closely tied to the Aesthetic Movement (Esthetic Movement), which was popular at the end of the 19th century. This movement emphasized art for art's sake and embraced motifs from nature and Eastern cultures, such as peacocks, lilies, sunflowers, and Japanese forms.
Manufacturer and Dating: The board was made by J. & M.P. Bell & Co. of Glasgow, Scotland. The registration number (Rd. No.) that can be found on the back of similar boards points to a pattern registration date of 1887.
Details of the Pattern: It shows a rich chinoiserie-style image with prominent flower motifs representing the 'lilies', and a stylized bird, the 'peacock', in the central part. It is produced in several colors, including the blue in your photo and also in green and red.
Technique: It is made using the transferware technique, in which a detailed engraved design is printed on paper and then transferred onto the glazed earthenware.
This specific pattern is an esteemed example of Scottish pottery from that period and reflects the contemporaneous fascination with Eastern designs and the principles of the Aesthetic Movement.
Of course, very carefully packed, insured shipping!
Good luck with your bidding!
