Description from the seller
Renaissance enamelled plaque – Allegorical marriage scene – Limoges, late 16th–early 17th century
Enamel painting on copper attributed to a Limoges workshop – monogram on the reverse
Rare convex copper plaque, polychrome enamelled, depicting a Renaissance-inspired wedding scene, executed in the manner of the great Limoges ateliers.
The composition centers on a couple, surrounded by figures dressed in elegant attire.
On the right, a figure bending a green branch, a symbolic gesture often interpreted as an allegory of marital union, evoking the end of bachelor life and the entry into married life. This theme appears in the humanist iconography of the sixteenth century.
The decor is distinguished by:
• a rich palette (deep reds, lapis blues, golds)
• fine gold accents on the costumes
• a delicate sculpting of faces
• a checkerboard floor perspective, typical of the Renaissance
Superior quality work, akin to Limoges-inspired narrative productions intended for cabinets of curiosities and learned enthusiasts.
An old carved and re-gilded wooden frame, probably 17th century, decorated with fruits and foliage, perfectly in keeping with the work.
Signature: monogram on the reverse ('M.S. Limoges')
Plate dimensions: 19 x 15 cm
State of conservation
• Well-preserved enamel
• Light surface wear and micro-scratches consistent with age
• Old frame with patina and minor touch-ups.
• No major restoration visible
