Description from the seller
Pair of silver boxes for holy oils – 19th century – France
Set consisting of two solid silver liturgical ampoules, intended to contain the holy oils used in the Catholic sacraments (the Anointing of the Sick, Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders).
Each bulb is engraved:
• O.S. → Oleum Sanctum (oil of the catechumens or holy oil)
• S.C → Sanctum Chrisma (holy chrism)
The lids are topped by a raised Latin cross, inlaid, with a hammered decoration in the recesses.
A sober and elegant finish, typical of 19th-century liturgical metalwork.
The two boxes are connected by a central hinge—the original system—allowing for practical liturgical transport.
Fire-gilded interior (vermeil) to protect the consecrated oils – gilding still clearly visible.
Presented in their original antique box, bound in black, with a blue velvet interior.
Functional brass clasp.
Very good overall condition for its age.
Normal signs of wear from old liturgical use: micro-scratches, patina, small marks visible in photos.
Sturdy hinge, functional lids.
Old case with wear consistent with age (corners rubbed, velvet marked).
Photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement their presentation. They allow you to assess their condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
