Description from the seller
Cylindrical box in yellow ouraline glass with lid, from the "Valambert" collection of the Val Saint Lambert Glassworks, as reproduced in the 1908 catalog.
This set belongs to the refined decorative production of the house in the early 20th century, a period during which Val Saint Lambert developed elegant forms associated with innovative colored glass. The box is signed under the lid 'VAL SAINT LAMBERT DÉPOSÉ' and bears inside the goblet the inscription 'VAL ST LAMBERT BELGIQUE', markings characteristic of productions of that era.
The box consists of a thick cylindrical body, with slightly bulged walls, resting on a solid base that ensures good stability. The decorative surface is structured by broad vertical molded panels, separated by narrower, finely textured zones, creating a regular play of reliefs and facets. This alternation gives the whole a rhythmic, architectural reading. The lid, perfectly fitted, repeats the same decorative vocabulary to ensure visual continuity. It is crowned by a faceted spherical knob, designed with geometric facets, facilitating handling while adding a refined ornamental touch.
The color is one of the main attractions of this piece: a bright yellow-green typical of uranium glass, also called vaseline glass. This particular shade is obtained by adding uranium oxides to the glass composition, a common practice from the late 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century. Uranium glass stands out for its clarity, its chromatic depth, and its ability to react vividly under ultraviolet light (395 nm), emitting a characteristic green fluorescence. These properties made it a highly appreciated material for decorative objects, both for its distinctive visual appearance and for the technical innovation it represented.
The condition is good. The lid has a few small chips from use, including one on an exterior face, which is more visible, while the others, located on edges, remain discreet. A small defect in the inner threads intended to adjust the lid is also to be noted, with no notable impact when the lid is in place. The body of the box shows only light signs of wear consistent with the object's age.
Around 1908, Val Saint Lambert, located in Seraing near Liège, already enjoys an international reputation, combining technical excellence, formal creativity, and mastery of colored glass. The pieces of the « Valambert » collection fully illustrate this period of innovation, where the tradition of crystal and chromatic explorations meet in objects that are both functional and decorative.
The dimensions are:
- Total height: 13 centimeters,
- Width: 7.7 centimeters,
- Total weight: 425 grams.
The jar and its lid will be packaged individually with great care, and the whole set will be shipped quickly in a secure manner. On-site collection and combined shipping are available. The photos are part of the description.
