Description from the seller
Ancient Russian Orthodox icon – Mother of God (Theotokos)
Beautiful, hand-painted Russian Orthodox icon of the Mother of God, executed on a wooden panel according to traditional iconographic rules. Mary is depicted with a restrained, contemplative gaze and a gilded halo, a symbol of her holiness. In her hand she holds an open manuscript with Church Slavonic text, which gives this icon a strong spiritual and historical aura.
The warm earth tones, refined brushwork, and subtle details in the clothing indicate craftsmanship and a classical Orthodox style. The visible craquelure, signs of wear, and patina are consistent with age and contribute to the authentic charm of the object.
- Mother of God. Russia. Around the 19th century.
- Icon. Tempera on wood.
Left panel of a Deesis.
- Engraved inscriptions on the reverse.
Carefully packed and shipped insured.
