Simson initially produced weapons, bicycles, automobiles, motorcycles, and baby carriages.
After World War II, everything changed in East Germany. There was a great need for affordable means of transportation. In 1955, production of the SR1 mopeds began.

In 1968 the Schwalbe (Swallow) series was improved. The engine was modified for more power. The noise level was reduced by a different intake and exhaust path. They were also equipped with friction dampers on the suspension.

The KR51 Schwalbe moped was a hit and stayed in production throughout the entire 1970s.
