Romania, traditional Romanian handwoven Laicer (Macat) model, 200 cm by 180 cm, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Traditional Romanian Handwoven Laicer / Macat – Early 20th Century
Authentic traditional Romanian laicer (macat), entirely handwoven on a traditional loom, originating from a private family heritage. This textile was received as part of a dowry from the owner’s great-grandmother, which strongly supports its age and authenticity.
The piece features classic Romanian folk geometric motifs, including diamonds and linear symbolic patterns, traditionally associated with protection, prosperity, and continuity. The composition is well balanced and rhythmical, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship typical of rural Romanian weaving traditions.
The color palette is dominated by deep green and golden yellow, tones characteristic of natural dyes used in traditional textiles from the late 19th and early 20th century. The surface shows a natural patina consistent with age, while the colors remain remarkably well preserved.
Material: Handwoven wool (warp likely hemp or cotton, typical of the period)
Technique: Traditional loom weaving
Condition: Excellent – no tears, repairs, or major fading; strong, dense fibers and stable structure
Origin: Romania, rural area
Provenance: Family heirloom, dowry piece
Estimated period: circa 1900–1930
(possibly late 19th century)
This laicer is a fine example of Eastern European folk textile art, suitable for collectors, interior decoration, or ethnographic collections.
