Description from the seller

African Kulango statue from the Ivory Coast.

Height: 25 cm

This Kulango statue is dated from the mid 20th century and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

This statue is a beautiful example of the unusual Kulango sculpture. It bears the rounded, oval facial contour characteristic of Kulango art, while the pose and execution betray the influence of their neighboring tribes, including the Akan and the Baule. The woman stands with her legs directly under her body. This pose is directly related to similar Baule sculptures and is also seen in the famous Ashanti Akua'ba fertility dolls, made in the later figurative style. The woman's ribbed neck, suggesting an abundance of necklaces, is also related to the earliest Akua'ba types. Perhaps the most striking feature of this beautiful woman is her fantastic hairstyle. Her hair is a very beautiful eight-piece hairstyle, one of which is unfortunately partially missing. This type of statue was used for rituals and offerings to the healer and represents the epitome of feminine beauty, as seen by the Kulango tribe.

The tip of the right foot is missing and is displayed on a metal base.
