Description from the seller

Sculpted pommel in pearwood, Central Europe, 1880–1920.

Production in Central Europe, in the Alpine and Bohemian regions, where animal imagery and symbolic scenes play an important role in the utilitarian objects carved at the end of the 19th century.

Pearwood is worked in direct carving.

The eyes of the bird are made of filé glass, of rare, tiny dimensions—a technique uncommon for this type of sculpture, executed here with precision.

Hollowed base originally intended for a fine shaft, compatible with a parasol or a parade cane; wear is observed from prolonged use around the base of the pommel.

Diameter of the barrel opening: 1 cm

Total diameter of the base: 1.5 cm

A high-quality carved utilitarian object, remarkable for its subject and for the mastery of its execution.
