Bronze Age spearhead from the Bronze Age, with a triangular blade, upward-sloping shoulders, a subtle central mid-rib, and a short flat tang with a rivet hole; in Good condition, about 18.2 cm long and 3.7 cm wide, patinated with earthy encrustation, provenance Ex. London Collection (formed since 1990).
Description from the seller
A fine bronze spearhead featuring a triangular blade with upwards sloping shoulders. A very subtle, flattened central mid-rib runs down the centre of the blade. A short, flat tang extends from the bottom of the blade and features a rivet hole. Patination and earthy encrustation to the surface as well as some minor chipping along the edges of the blade.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the Western Asiatic area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Archaeological evidence suggests that the bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
Measurements: (circa) L 18.2cm x W 3.7cm
Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990 - present.
