Description from the seller
Bronze fawn
Inspiration Villa dei Papiri – Grand Tour
19th century
Elegant bronze sculpture depicting a fawn, inspired by the famous ancient bronze statues from the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, an iconic model rediscovered and widely reinterpreted during the Grand Tour era of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The figure is rendered with great formal balance and plastic refinement: the slender neck, the head slightly inclined, and the vigilant bearing confer upon the animal a noble, composed, and timeless presence. The proportions are harmonious, the musculature merely hinted at, in line with the neoclassical taste that privileged measure, elegance, and a cultured allusion to antiquity.
The bronze casting is of excellent quality, with a solid surface and a beautiful natural dark patina, aged over time, that enhances the volumes and gives depth to the figure. The sculpture rests on an integrated rectangular base, also in bronze, coherent in style and period.
A piece attributable to the cultured decorative production of the 19th century, intended for aristocratic interiors, private studies, libraries, or collections inspired by classical antiquity, typical of houses associated with the 19th-century archaeological taste.
Provenance: ancient private residence
Period: 19th century
Material: bronze
Condition: very good, with normal and consistent signs of aging; original patina not forced
Dimensions:
– Height: 13 cm
– Length: 11 cm
– Depth: 4 cm
An object of great elegance and museum-quality taste, ideal for collectors, Grand Tour enthusiasts, and lovers of neoclassical sculpture with archaeological inspiration.
