Bronze mortar with its original pestle, dating to the 17th century, in patinated bronze from France, measuring 9 cm high, 14 cm wide and 14 cm deep, in good used condition with light signs of aging.
Description from the seller
Bronze mortar with ears – Europe, probably France or Flanders – late 16th / early 17th century
Solid cast bronze mortar, accompanied by its original pestle, typical of pharmaceutical and culinary production from the late Renaissance.
The body, of a flared frustum shape, is encircled by horizontal moldings and adorned with four imposing vertical ears, ribbed and speckled with bumps, functional and decorative.
Notch on the edge for placing the pestle.
Old patina, brown and greenish, with signs of regular wear on the collar and inside.
Pilon turned with two rings, displaying the same uniform patina.
Probable provenance: foundry workshops in northern France or in the former Netherlands (Flanders), late 16th – early 17th century.
This type of mortar, sturdy and ornate, was commonly used by apothecaries, herbalists, and in manorial kitchens.
Condition: good overall for its era, signs of wear, preserved antique patina.
