Francisco de Goya - Caprichos de Goya - 2006

Luxurious and extraordinary facsimile edition produced in 2006 by Editorial Planeta and the University of Zaragoza, of the 80 Caprichos by Goya, his masterpiece as a printmaker.
A collection of satirical engravings that critique the decadence of late 18th-century Spanish society.
Limited edition of 2,998 copies, numbered and notarized, with the facsimile reproduction of the 80 plates from the 1st edition of Caprichos, bearing the seal of the University of Zaragoza. The copy I am selling is number 1760, authenticated by a notary.
It is new, absolutely intact.
Experts consider it the most significant work in the Aragonese painter’s career as a printmaker.
To realize this luxury edition, the model used was the collection kept in the Library of the University of Zaragoza, the most important in the world in several respects.
First, it is the first edition, printed and supervised by Goya himself.
Moreover, it is one of only three copies in the world that include manuscripts for each engraving with comments by Goya.
And last but not least, the Zaragoza collection is the best preserved.
It is a special edition made by hand.
Each copy is a unique work.
The work is contained in a large protective case (50x35x10 cm) hand-lined with cotton fabric in which the first engraving of the collection, a self-portrait, has been printed.
Inside this case there is a second protective enclosure, within which are the 80 copies (the engravings are kept in this handcrafted case that imitates the original leather, and on its spine appears the inscription Caprich de Goya: since the word Caprichos didn’t fit for Goya, he left it as Caprich).
The reproductions are in the original size, preserving the colors, the stroke, and the original stains.
To achieve this, a stochastic screening has been used, allowing the dots to be removed, making the reproduction more faithful.
Four-color printing with varnish on 200 g Fedrigoni Corolla Book Ivory cotton paper.
This fidelity has been made possible thanks to the University of Zaragoza collection, which is the only one that maintains extreme cleanliness of all the engravings.
The edition includes the study book with 424 pages with historical interpretations of the Caprichos and with the reproduction of each engraving accompanied by a commentary.
Four specialists explain all the interpretations that have been made about the value and meaning of the Caprichos, commenting on and explaining the vicissitudes of the collection and the different interpretations.
Additionally, the plates appear one by one complemented by the preparatory drawings that are housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
