Antique French carriage clock with a Paris-signed mechanical movement, estimated period 1850–1900, in a gilded brass and glass case, eight-day power reserve, strikes on the half hour with a repetition button, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
The item I am offering is an antique French travel striking clock, also known as an officer’s pendulum clock or carriage clock. The clock originates from Paris and the movement is signed 'Hands Paris'. It dates to the late 19th to early 20th century, roughly between 1880 and 1910, most likely around 1900.
The case is probably made of gilded brass and is richly decorated. It is glazed all around, so that the movement is visible from several sides. On the top there is a carrying handle, as is typical for travel pendulums of this era. The white enamel dial shows Roman numerals and is equipped with blued steel hands.
Inside, a mechanical movement with mainspring and platform escapement works—the construction characteristic of high-quality French travel clocks. The clock features a striking mechanism with a repeater. The hour strike can be manually triggered by the button mounted above. An automatic on-the-hour strike does not currently occur. The clock is not running; the repeater button triggers an hourly strike.
The watch is in good, age-appropriate condition with corresponding patina. The gilding is largely well preserved. The dial shows no noticeable damage, and the glasses are fully present. The movement appears complete visually. The timekeeping behavior has not been tested over an extended period. Due to the age of the watch, a professional revision is recommended.
The dimensions of the clock are approximately 18.5 cm tall, including the handle, about 13.8 cm to the base of the handle, about 9.5 cm wide, and about 8.3 cm deep.
This is a decorative and collectible object of French watchmaking art from around 1900, of interest to both collectors of historic travel clocks and as a high-quality decorative piece.
