Description from the seller
Votive terracotta statuette of Aphrodite with stephane
Culture: Hellenistic Greek
Date: 3rd–2nd century BC
Description:
Votive terracotta figurine depicting Aphrodite, of Hellenistic Greek manufacture.
The goddess is shown nude, standing in a frontal pose, with an elongated body of simplified yet harmonious proportions. The stylised face is topped by a tall stephane (diadem) rendered with concentric bands.
The anatomical rendering features small prominent breasts, wide hips, and a defined abdomen – typical of the standardised Aphrodite anadyomene type, associated with fertility and beauty.
The hollow body was mould-made and subsequently hand-finished. At the underside, the original technical opening is still visible, now partially sealed, a recurrent feature of this class of objects. The surface retains a natural calcareous patina and minor soil encrustations, consistent with long archaeological burial.
Dimensions: height c. 20 cm.
Condition: intact, with ancient wear, minor chipping and superficial fissures; no modern restoration.
Provenance: German Private collection 1970
