The Cold War ended in 1991, but its echoes can still be heard today. An example are the radio stations, shortwave radio transmissions of coded messages, believed to be intended for undercover agents in enemy states. Although they originated in the darkest days of the last century, these transmissions continue to this day, with daily broadcasts from countries such as Russia, Cuba, and North Korea. Shadows of the State is a photographic project by Lewis Bush that investigates these mysterious transmissions and attempts to locate the probable transmission sites of thirty of these stations. These sites are then mapped using high-resolution satellite images and viewed together with radio spectrograms, audio recordings, and detailed information about each station.
