Two-headed discoidal female idol from the Bronze Age, dating to the end of the 3rd millennium BC, originating from Kanesh region in Cappadocia, Anatolia, carved in stone with a discoidal body and two stylised heads, 16.5 cm high and 9.8 cm wide, in good condition with old restorations to the necks.
Description from the seller
Two-headed discoidal female idol dating from the end of the 3rd millennium BCE, originating from Cappadocia, in Anatolia (present-day Turkey). These objects are also associated with Bronze Age cultures of the Cyclades and Anatolia.
16.5 cm in height.
Good condition, old restorations on the necks.
• Period: End of the 3rd millennium BC, Bronze Age.
• Origin: Region of Kanesh (Kültepe) in Cappadocia, Anatolia.
• Material: stone typical of Anatolia.
• Description: The idol features a discoidal body adorned with carved motifs, often triangular or zigzag, and two stylized heads with circular incisions representing the eyes.
• Function: Although their exact function remains uncertain in the absence of written texts from this period, it is believed that they were symbolic figures related to fertility and fecundity. They were probably used during rituals and could accompany the deceased into their tombs.
Similar specimens are kept in major museums, notably the Louvre Museum in Paris. These statuettes are regarded as important examples of prehistoric art and primitive art, appreciated for their minimalist and powerful style.
