City of Darkness by Greg Girard, signed on the title page, 216-page softcover photography book in English, published by Watermark, square 27.5 × 27.5 cm, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
One-of-a-kind, exceptionally signed copy on the title page by Greg Girard, unique and virtually unavailable on the internet in a signed edition. This book originally published in 1993 enjoyed great success, and this first edition required several reprints to satisfy readers’ demand (not to be confused with the 2014 new edition). 216 pages and 320 color photographs, English text of 32 interviews with residents, and an introductory text by Greg Girard. Illustrated soft cover. Book in very good condition.
Hak Nam, the City of Darkness, Kowloon's former fortified city, was a distinctive district in the heart of Hong Kong, covering an area of 2.6 hectares. Rising up to 15 stories, the various buildings housed 35,000 people. One wonders today how so many people could live and work in such difficult conditions. The children had hardly any outdoor space to play and their only resource for play was the terraces of the buildings, which also served as storage. Before its definitive demolition in 1992, Greg Girard spent four years exploring the city, meeting its inhabitants, and photographing them at work or at home.
Greg Girard is a Canadian photographer whose work has explored, for more than thirty years, the social and physical transformations of the largest cities in Asia. Among his photographic monographs are *Phantom Shanghai* (Magenta, Toronto, 2007, listed in Parr & Lundgren The Chinese Photobook, page 407), *Hanoi Calling* (Magenta, 2010), and *In the Near Distance* (Kominek, Berlin, 2010), a collection of his early photographs taken in Asia and North America between 1973 and 1986. His works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and other public and private collections.
Book from my personal collection, in very good condition with only minor wear to the spine (see photo), kept with the utmost care. Shipped securely with guaranteed international tracking. For multiple purchases, combined shipping is available with a refund of any excess postage paid via PayPal.
