Description from the seller

Late 19th Century Historicist / Early Jugendstil Brass Jardinière, Signed J.P.A.

Impressive and richly decorated late 19th century brass jardinière, executed in a Historicist style with early Jugendstil influence. This substantial planter is lavishly embossed with dense floral and pinecone motifs, combined with powerful sculptural lion head mascarons.

The jardinière stands on four elegant claw-style feet, giving the piece a strong architectural presence. The combination of naturalistic ornament with classical lion masks is characteristic of the transitional period in European decorative arts, when Historicism began to merge with the emerging Jugendstil movement.

The underside is signed with a triangular maker’s mark “J.P.A.”
The surface displays a beautiful warm, original patina. The underside shows honest age-related wear consistent with over a century of use. No structural damage, cracks, or repairs observed. A true eye-catcher with excellent decorative and collector value.
Ideal as a planter, centerpiece, or decorative cachepot for both classic and eclectic interiors.

Dimensions: 22 x 43 x 25 cm (height × width × depth)
Period: 1890-1900; France
Weight: 1.95 kg
Condition: In great antique condition. Rich original patina. Minor wear to the underside consistent with age and use. The photos are a part of the description.

Historical context:
During the late 19th century, European decorative arts were dominated by Historicism, drawing inspiration from earlier Renaissance and Baroque sources. At the same time, new artistic movements such as Jugendstil began introducing naturalistic motifs and more organic surface decoration. Transitional pieces like this jardinière perfectly illustrate this stylistic shift and are increasingly appreciated by collectors for their hybrid character.

A heavy quality, highly decorative and collectible late 19th century centerpiece — a true statement object.
