Description from the seller
Repoussé silver liturgical censer – Armenia / Persia (Tabriz), dated 1866
Important liturgical thurible in repoussé and chased silver, globular in shape on a footed stand, complete with its chains, movable lid, summit cross and bells.
The set is entirely worked in repoussé:
– stylized vegetal friezes, scrolls and flowers over the entire body,
– upper register adorned with winged cherubs,
– central medallion depicting the Virgin and Child,
– regular openings for smoke diffusion.
The interior bears traces of use (incense residues), indicating genuine liturgical use.
Two inscriptions engraved on the body specify the destination and the date of the object:
they indicate that this censer was offered to the church of Tabriz (Tauris / Tavris) in memory of 'Zohrab' by 'Alexander of Constantinople (Bolis)', on August 24, 1866.
An inscription is partially lacunar (an ancient gap).
Characteristic work of Christian goldsmithing in the East (Armenian/Anatolian area), blending Christian iconography with Orientalizing ornamentation.
Good overall condition
Small impacts, wear, and occasional deformations related to use.
Lack of substance in an inscription.
Natural patina, not cleaned.
A rare liturgical object due to its documented provenance (Tabriz) and its precise dating, intended for use in an Eastern Christian church (probably Armenian).
Photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement their presentation. They allow you to assess their condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
