Description from the seller
Large carved wooden crucifix – Christ on the cross – late 19th - early 20th century
A significant carved-wood crucifix in the round, depicting the dead Christ, mounted on an architecturally styled cross resting on a tiered base.
The Christ is finely sculpted, with a realistic, expressive anatomy: a prominent chest, visible ribs, head tilted to the right, an emaciated face, and hair rendered in deep locks.
The perizonium is tied at the hip, with broad, angular folds, typical of late-19th-century religious sculpture.
The cross is carved from a single type of wood (probably oak or walnut), featuring a carved decoration of scrolls and volutes at the ends of the arms. The titulus bears the inscription INRI carved in a cartouche. The base consists of several molded steps, underscored by a sculpted frieze on the front.
Beautiful old patina, not repainted, revealing the wood grain and the sculptor's tool marks. A cohesive overall piece, probably from a workshop of religious statuary (France or Central Europe).
Good overall condition; wear and small losses consistent with age (notably on the head and the extremities), with no heavy restoration or repainting.
Photos are an integral part of the object's description and complement its presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before making any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
Happy bidding!
