Helios antique high-frequency Violet Ray device made of glass, produced in Germany, circa 1910–1920, 35 cm long by 25 cm wide, one item in good condition with minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
The device in the picture is an antique high-frequency irradiation apparatus of the Helios brand. These devices, also known as Violet Ray Devices, were used for therapeutic purposes in the first half of the 20th century.
Device details
Manufacturer: The devices were originally manufactured between 1925 and 1930 by Hermann Will at the Helios Plant in Jena. Later there were also replicas, for example by Franz Gischka in Linz, which were sold until the 1970s.
Operation: It is an electrotherapeutic device that generates high-frequency currents using a disruptive discharge coil (Tesla coil). The included glass attachments (electrodes) were placed on various parts of the body and, during operation, produced a violet glow due to the ionized gas inside.
Application: Back then these devices were attributed with healing effects for a variety of ailments, including acne, rheumatism, psoriasis, hair loss, and nerve pain. From today’s perspective they are often classified as "quackery" (Quack Medicine), since the advertised healing effects are not scientifically substantiated.
Condition and Use
The device is housed in its original case and is equipped with a variety of glass electrodes, as was typical for these sets. Such antique devices are today coveted collectibles and fascinating historical artifacts of medical history, rather than for medical treatments.
Disclaimer: This device is a historical medical instrument. The described therapeutic applications are outdated and do not meet today's medical standards. The device should not be used for self-treatment.
