Idole-plaque ibérique, a prehistoric Chalcolithic stone artefact from the Iberian Peninsula dating to ca. 3500–2500 BCE, measuring 11.5 cm high by 8 cm wide in good condition, from a Belgian private collection; acquired in 2015 from Belgium, with the previous owner having acquired it in 1960 from a private collection.
Description from the seller
Prehistoric idol-plaque, dating from the late Neolithic or Chalcolithic (Copper Age), found on the Iberian Peninsula, notably in Spain or Portugal.
11.5 cm high x 8 cm wide.
These artifacts are generally dated between 3500 and 2500 BC. They are often made of shale or stone.
The object features engravings of geometric patterns, mainly hatched triangles, arranged in horizontal bands. These motifs may depict clothing or other decorative elements. Instances with patterns resembling owls are common.
Although their exact use remains a matter of debate, it is thought that they were ritual objects, amulets, representations of the mother goddess, or, according to recent theories, engraved genealogical records.
Some famous examples come from sites such as La Granja de Céspedes (Badajoz, Extremadura) in Spain, or Valencina de la Concepción (Seville).
Belgian private collection
