Statue of Kṣitigarbha (Dizang) — China, Qing Dynasty — carved, lacquered, and gilded wood.
A rare ancient statue of Ksitigarbha (Dizang) in lacquered and gilded wood.

Important statue of Buddhist devotion representing the Bodhisattva Kshitigarbha (known as Dizang in China). This piece features the typical characteristics of Qing Dynasty religious sculpture (18th–19th century).

Subject: The Bodhisattva is depicted with a shaven head, like a monk, in a meditative posture on a lotus pedestal.

Technique: Wood carved from a single piece, covered with a primer (gesso), with a red lacquer and gold leaf gilding, of which beautiful remnants are still visible.

Dimensions: Height of 42 cm.

Weight: 948 grams (dry and aged wood).

Beautiful used condition 'in its natural state' with an authentic patina. There are some losses to the gilding, natural cracks in the wood and lacquer due to age, which confirm its historical character.

The urn is clearly marked on the front. The base shows natural wear and traces of ancient tools.
