Description from the seller
A trenching spade from the early 1900s made by the IDEAL brand, in good condition.
"Eckardt's IDEAL" (or Ideal Spades) is a historic brand of high-quality German digging tools, founded in 1899 by Emil Eckardt in Herdecke. The product was launched on the market in 1903 as the "IDEAL-Spaten", known for its durability.
An important innovation of Ideal spades was the special rolling technique that allowed the shovel blade and the sleeve into which the shovel handle is inserted to be manufactured from a single piece of steel. This made the spades sturdier and more durable. The conical rolling also results in a thinner blade at the cutting edge and makes the blade self-sharpening.
