Description from the seller
Pair of lacquered wooden Chippendale chairs, following Pierre Lottier, 1970s – Spain
An exceptional pair of chairs with a Chippendale-style frame, in red lacquered wood in an Andalusian taste, following the style of the prestigious French designer Pierre Lottier, dating from the 1970s. Orientalizing decorations with gold chinoiserie motifs.
Its structure is robust, with the front legs curved, known as “cabriolé legs.” It follows the English Chippendale style, a furniture style named after Thomas Chippendale (1718 – 1779), one of the great English-born cabinetmakers. In short, it is a blend of Rococo, Neoclassical, and Baroque with certain nuances of Oriental influence. It is an elegant, sophisticated, and majestic style. It is characterized by the prominence of wood, especially noble woods, which were usually paired with the use of textiles (curtains, carpets, upholstery…) of high quality and typically printed, where Oriental motifs and scenes were primordial. The curved legs are one of its identifying features. One of them has lost the chambrana.
The influence of Pierre Lottier, a French designer and architect born in 1888, is also recognized in them, in a France that would soon become the epicenter of an artistic revolution. One of the distinctive characteristics of his style and work was his ability to use exotic and rare materials in his creations. Precious woods, fine lacquers, ivory, and other luxury materials came together in his hands to form furniture that was not only functional but authentic works of art. His style was a fusion of the modern and the traditional, which allowed him to create pieces that felt both timeless and emblematic of his era. But his designs were not only appreciated for their aesthetics, but also for their technical sophistication. Lottier had an expert eye for detail and balanced opulence with elegance, which made him highly sought after by the wealthiest and most demanding clients of Parisian society. His creations, which combine the exotic with the modern, remain a testament to his creative genius and his ability to capture the spirit of an era.
