Description from the seller
Large Early Art Deco Table Lamp – Daum Nancy – Signed Double-Layer Pâte de Verre – Wrought Iron – circa 1915–1920
Important French early Art Deco table lamp by Daum, dating from circa 1915–1920, a pivotal period marking the transition from late Art Nouveau to the emergence of Art Deco.
This lamp has always remained within the same family environment and has been naturally passed down. It has been preserved in its original condition, without restoration or alteration, ensuring full authenticity, historical integrity, and overall coherence.
The base is crafted in wrought iron, showing a deep, even natural patina developed over time. The original welds are intact, and the lamp is stable, complete, and without missing elements. The elegant yet restrained design reflects the tradition of French decorative metalwork of the early 20th century.
The shade is made of heavy double-layer pâte de verre, diffusing a soft, warm, and enveloping light, characteristic of high-quality Art Deco interiors.
It is deeply engraved in the glass:
“DAUM – Cross of Lorraine – NANCY”, with the Cross of Lorraine, the emblematic signature of the Daum Frères glassworks.
The absence of the later mention “France” is consistent with pre-1920 production. The signature shows a natural evolution over time, without affecting its legibility or authenticity; it remains clear, visible, and non-contestable.
The glass is in excellent condition, with no cracks, chips, or restoration, which is exceptional for pâte de verre from this period.
The lamp has remained true to its original use and history.
Historically, French Art Deco experienced major international success from 1925–1930 onwards, particularly following the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris (1925). Major French makers — Daum, Schneider, Muller Frères — became internationally renowned.
This lamp belongs to the early phase preceding that global recognition, enhancing its collectible and historical value.
Due to its early date, signed Daum Nancy glass, and high-quality wrought iron base, this lamp belongs to the upper segment of the international Art Deco lighting market and should be regarded as a collector’s piece rather than a decorative object.
