Description from the seller
Polychrome enamelled plaque – Adoration of the Magi – Limoges – Signed A. Huguerville
Superb circular plaque in polychrome painted enamel depicting the Adoration of the Magi, an iconic scene in Christian iconography.
The composition is rich, balanced, and of great refinement: the Virgin seated, holding the Child Jesus, Saint Joseph in the background, the three Magi kneeling or standing, accompanied by their mounts and servants, in a finely detailed architectural and landscape setting. The enamel work is remarkable:
– deep and luminous colors (cobalt blues, carmine reds, greens and ochers)
– gold highlights delicately laid on the clothing, notably on the kneeling king's cape
– precise modeling of faces and drapery
– excellent command of volumes and shadows
The plaque is signed in the bottom right with “A. Huguerville”, an artist active in Limoges at the start of the 20th century, known for his enamels inspired by the 17th century, in the manner of the great Baroque religious compositions.
Original frame design that simulates an embossed frame with scrolling decoration, in the spirit of antique metalwork, mounted in a gilded wooden frame with a burgundy velvet fabric background, very elegant and perfectly showcasing the plaque.
Dimensions of the enameled plaque: height: 19 cm x width: 16 cm
Very good overall condition. No chips or cracks visible. The gilding is well preserved. An antique frame with normal wear.
