Description from the seller
Altar Cross - exceptional altar cross – H. Haan & Zoon, Antwerp – 19th century – silvered bronze, cloisonné enamels, cabochons – Neogothic style
Rare and spectacular high-quality altar cross, the work of the firm H. Haan & Zoon, a famous Antwerp silversmith active in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in liturgical silverware.
The cross is made of silvered bronze, richly chased, adorned with cabochons and a remarkable cloisonné enamel polychrome decoration.
The Crucified Christ is depicted with great naturalism: fine anatomy, an expressive face, a detailed crown of thorns. The radiant halo in the background emphasizes the sacred dimension of the figure.
The arms of the cross are decorated with geometric and floral motifs, alternating carved surfaces and enameled elements.
There is an opaline cabochon inserted (moonstone) at the end of an arm, adding a luminous accent.
Iconographic decoration of the Passion
At the base of the shaft, a frieze of cloisonné enamels depicts the Arma Christi (Instruments of the Passion)
Each symbol is treated individually in circular medallions on a green background, in accordance with a perfectly codified iconography.
Sculpted base
The cross rests on three figures of winged dragons, finely sculpted, with outstretched wings and expressive heads.
These fantastical creatures, typical of neo-Gothic vocabulary, confer upon the overall composition a monumental and solemn presence.
Stamped signature: H. HAAN – ANTWERP, visible on the back (see photo), confirming the authenticity of the manufacture.
Dimensions: Height: 119 cm x Width: 32 cm x Depth: 32 cm
Conservation status
Very good overall condition. Professional cleaning performed.
Light wear to the silvering in places, consistent with age and liturgical use.
Enamels well preserved, with no major defects.
Photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement their presentation. They allow you to assess their condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
