Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Ancient Roman silver ring with inscription. The front the ring is decorated with a shallow groove, dividing the ring band in two parts, uniting on the opposite side. The front is inscribed with TYX - IDA (or similar) in two lines.
Outside diameter: ± 17,8 mm
Inside diameter: ± 15,2 - 14,7 mm
Weight: ± 2,10 g
Condition: good condition, small size ring. The silver retains an attractive muted patina. Some encrustations on the surface, signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
The ring bears a lightly incised inscription, plausibly read as “TYX” on the upper band, likely referring to Tyche, the goddess of fortune, and “IDA” on the lower band, which may represent a personal name or a mythological reference. Such abbreviated inscriptions are characteristic of Roman personal and protective jewellery.
MATERIAL
This object has been carefully examined with regard to its material composition and surface characteristics.
Specialised laboratory analysis such as metallurgical testing (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting and is more commonly associated with academic or institutional research.
Destructive testing methods (such as acid testing) permanently damage the object’s surface and are not appropriate for archaeological material.
Historically, modern hallmarking systems did not exist. The alloy composition of gold and silver could vary depending on local resources, trade networks, recycling practices and prevailing economic conditions.
