Rare Medieval Crusader era, silver ring with engraved X on the shoulders of the ring band, set with a square amber intaglio. Diagonal linear decorations on the sides of the setting.
Outside diameter: ± 20,6 mm
Inside diameter: ± 18,6 - 17,6 mm
Condition: Good and solid condition, attractive dark silver patina. Wearable with care. Ring is in virtually uncleaned condition. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
Amber was a very expensive and highly appreciated commodity from the Roman period to the late Medieval period. The Amber Road transported the 'gold of the north' for thousands of years from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean area.
MATERIAL
This object has been carefully examined with regard to its material composition and surface characteristics.
Specialised laboratory analysis such as metallurgical testing (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting and is more commonly associated with academic or institutional research.
Destructive testing methods (such as acid testing) permanently damage the object’s surface and are not appropriate for archaeological material.
Historically, modern hallmarking systems did not exist. The alloy composition of gold and silver could vary depending on local resources, trade networks, recycling practices and prevailing economic conditions.
