Description from the seller

Copper painting – Saint bishop with angel – 1800

Oil on copper plate, with an antique, richly carved frame.

The work depicts a saint bishop in a solemn posture, holding the pastoral staff in his left hand and a book in his right hand.

A cherub appears on the right, holding a writing tablet inscribed with several letters (A-B-C-D-E-F). An unusual and interesting detail: this tablet references the iconography of educators and doctors of the Church. The didactic gesture of the putto and the presence of the book suggest a symbolic attribution to a saint bishop doctor, but the work does not include a decisive attribute.

Technique
Oil on copper plate (typical thickness and back oxidation, with old handwritten numbering).
Very good overall condition: minimal signs of use, a few superficial micro-cracks, no structural gaps.
Pigments and varnishes conforming to an 18th-century execution.

Cadre

Beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame, 19th century, with a highly ornate Rocaille decoration: scrolls, flowers, shells, deep reliefs. Slightly worn gilding, but coherent and decorative.
The display is perfectly mounted in this frame, ready to be exhibited.

Dimensions
Copper plaque (view): 15.5 × 11.5 cm
Frame dimensions: 30 x 27.5 cm

Provenance

Old private collection (old numbering on the reverse: no. 4068).

State

Very good overall condition for its age. No visible restorations. Solid frame.
