Description from the seller
Silver bishop bust reliquary – 19th century
Very beautiful solid silver anthropomorphic reliquary, depicting a saint bishop, dressed in his cope and wearing the episcopal mitre, decorated with colored glass cabochons simulating precious stones.
The object rests on four lion-shaped feet, a traditional symbol of vigilance and spiritual strength.
This bust-shaped reliquary with an opening reveals a partially gilded interior with fine gold (vermeil), intended to hold bodily relics or sacred objects.
The work is finely chiseled, with vegetal friezes on the robe and floral decorations on the mitre. The whole reflects high-quality goldsmithing, probably crafted in a religious workshop in Northern Italy or the Imperial Austria (Austro-Hungarian Empire).
