Some Mossi masks depict wild animals such as the buffalo, elephant, and lion, which are the most common.
However, it is rarer to see domesticated animals elevated to the rank of ritual masks.
Zo0nomorphic masks of animals such as the Ram, Goat, Horse, Rooster, and Dog will nonetheless bring additional symbolic meaning to the masquerades, and in some cases represent the animal that will be sacrificed.

The first Mossi Empire was founded in the 15th century by invading forces from Ghana.
