Description from the seller
Authentic and elegant ancient Dan-Yacouba mask, Ivory Coast, with striking presence
A remarkable sculptural intensity, between purity of lines and expressive power
Dan-Yacouba mask, Ivory Coast, Montagne region (Man – Biankouma). Anthropomorphic mask of great formal elegance, belonging to one of the most sought-after stylistic corpora in West Africa.
Of remarkable sobriety, this mask is distinguished by the perfect balance of its volumes and mastery of its construction. The face, oval and taut, is structured by a central marked nasal ridge that divides the composition with authority. The narrow eyes, in fine horizontal slits, give the gaze a restrained, almost internal intensity, typical of the most refined Dan masks.
The mouth, slightly open and powerfully modeled, introduces a subtle expressive tension, between restraint and presence. It gives the face a living, almost inhabited dimension, reinforcing the embodied character of the piece.
The surface bears a deep, lustrous patina, with brown and black nuances, revealing ancient and repeated use. The worn areas, gently softened, testify to prolonged ritual handling. This patina, homogeneous and dense, fully contributes to the aesthetic quality of the work.
The purity of the lines, the reduction of forms to the essential, and the quiet strength emanating from this mask find obvious echoes in the researches of European avant-gardes. As with some 20th-century sculptors, the simplification of volumes does not diminish the power; it concentrates it. This type of Dan-Yacouba mask thus sits among the forms that have deeply influenced the modern gaze on sculpture.
In its original context, this mask was used during social and initiatory performances, embodying spirits or specific roles within the community. Worn, animated, it became a full-fledged actor, revealing its full dimension in movement and dance.
Provenance: private Swiss collection.
Piece of high quality, with pure and timeless aesthetics, representing an excellent example of Dan-Yacouba sculptural refinement, ideal for a demanding collection.
